This is a view from Mount Baldy, one I have not personally experienced. Even though I have been in the area during some winters, my visits were all focused at the base of the eastern slope searching for clues and gold bars. I have driven by where Camp McKinney once existed but never stopped to look around, unsure of who owns the properties. But I should for no other reason than to visit the cemetery. Hi Jim, do you know the location of the cemetery? We found the marking of Victor Engston (died June 18 1898) at the camp near the main road 2 weeks ago. I have a photo of it, but did not move it. Would like to put it back where it belongs. Thanks.

As odd as it seems, in my 78 trips to the area I have never personally visited the cemetery. I suspect that you noticed the marker on the road towards the Mt. Baldy community if the homemade marker sign for Camp McKinney is still up. The old townsite and cemetery should be in that area. I seem to remember a dump site on the left side near there. I am not aware of residents in that area although there might be. It’s possible someone wanted to steal the marker but got scared off and tossed the marker. Wherever the cemetery is, there should be a walking trail from the road faint or well used. Drive slowly on the shoulder around the CM sign and you might notice it. Dario, I recently visited the site and took the sign up to the cemetery where it belongs. From where you were, go in towards a pile of trash on the right upper side, if that makes sense. From the road where the sign was, think of straight ahead as 12 noon. The trail would be about 2 pm. The trail rises up and goes about 50 meters or so. You will see a chain link fence to the left with an entry way to the cemetery, something to keep the cattle out. Interesting to see after so many years have passed but in need of repairs. Perhaps I will organize something next summer. Even a little effort would go a long way. Thanks again for your initial contact.
